Basket, dual-basket or oven-style?

Updated

Pick a single basket if you cook for one to three and want the least fuss. Pick a dual basket if you always make a main and a side. Pick an oven-style model if you feed four or more, or you want it to replace your toaster. The rest of this page is the reasoning.

Single basket

A drawer with a handle. Hot air comes down from the top, and the small space is why it cooks fast. It is the simplest type to use and to clean. The limit is the floor. For one layer foods, a 6 quart basket suits two people by my math on the size page. The basket picks here are the COSORI TurboBlaze, the Ninja Air Fryer Pro, the Instant Vortex XL and, for one person, the Chefman TurboFry Touch.

Dual basket

Two small air fryers in one body. The Ninja DZ201 listing says each 4 quart zone has its own fan and heater. Smart Finish holds back the faster food so both end together. Match Cook runs both sides the same. Owners like exactly that. The catch is that neither floor is big. If you often cook one large thing, a dual basket is the wrong shape.

Oven-style

A countertop oven with a strong fan and an air fry setting. Food sits on a mesh basket or tray. You get far more floor, and you can see the food through the door. You give up counter space and some speed. The Breville's review summary has mixed reports on preheat time, with some owners calling it slow. A small basket unit has much less air to heat. Instant says its basket model needs little to no preheating, and COSORI makes preheat optional.

How much of the counter turns into cooking floor?

This one surprised me. For the COSORI, the listed cooking floor is about 51 percent of the counter it takes up. For the Instant it is about 47 percent. For the Breville, the interior is about 57 percent of its footprint. So the oven-style model is big, but it does not waste more counter than a basket does. It just asks for a lot of counter in one piece.

Which I'd choose
