Quarts vs what actually fits

Updated

A quart is a measure of volume. It tells you how much water the basket would hold if you filled it to the rim. You will never cook that way. Air fried food sits in one layer, or a loose pile, on a crisper plate near the bottom. The floor of the basket sets how much fits. The height mostly sets whether a tall item clears the heater.

Proof from the listings

Here is what each maker says its air fryer holds. These are maker claims, copied from the listings.

Air fryerListed sizeWhat the maker says fits
Ninja Air Fryer Pro AF1415 qtUp to 4 lbs of French fries or 5 lbs of chicken wings
Ninja DualZone DZ2018 qtUp to 4 lbs of French fries or chicken wings
Instant Vortex XL6 qt3.5 lb chicken or 2 lb fries
COSORI TurboBlaze6 qt20 chicken wings in the usable space
Chefman TurboFry Touch4 qtNo weight given. Serves 2 to 4 people
Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro1 cu ft14 pound turkey, 9 slices of bread, most 9 x 13 inch pans

Look at the first three rows. The 5 quart claims twice the fries of the 6 quart. The 8 quart claims no more fries than the 5 quart from the same brand. Nobody is lying, as far as I can tell. One maker is describing a basket filled deep. Another is describing what cooks well. You cannot compare air fryers by these claims, and you cannot compare them by quarts.

What to compare instead

  1. Look for basket dimensions. Two listings here give them. COSORI lists usable space of 9.31 by 9.31 inches, 3.48 inches tall with the crisper plate in and 4.49 inches without. Instant lists a basket of 9.05 by 9.64 by 3.94 inches.
  2. Multiply width by depth. That gives about 87 square inches for the COSORI and about 87 for the Instant. Both are 6 quart, and both come out near 14.5 square inches per quart.
  3. No dimensions on the listing? Use 14.5 square inches per quart as a rough guide for a square basket. A 5 quart works out to about 72 square inches and a 4 quart to about 58. Round baskets give you less usable floor, because food is mostly not round.
  4. Check the height if you want to roast something tall. The heater and fan sit right above the food. With about 3.5 to 4.5 inches of usable height in a 6 quart basket, a tall bird is a tight fit. Instant lists a 3.5 lb chicken as its maximum. None of the other basket listings I read says a whole chicken fits, so I will not say it either.

Dual baskets: the quarts add up, the floor does not

The Ninja DualZone DZ201 is sold as 8 quarts. It is two 4 quart baskets with a wall between them. By the rule above, each floor is about 58 square inches. That is a smaller floor than a single 5 quart basket. A large fish fillet or a row of long sausages that fits a 6 quart basket may not fit either side of the dual. What you get in return is two foods at two temperatures, done at the same minute.

Oven-style: floor is the whole point

The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro lists a 16 by 13.5 inch interior. That is about 216 square inches on one level, and the racks let you use more than one level for some jobs. The rack itself is a little smaller than the interior, so treat that as an upper limit.

To turn all this into a size for your household, use the size calculator. The six picks are compared on the shortlist.
