9 mistakes new air fryer owners make
Updated
Most air fryer letdowns come from how it is used, not which one was bought. The biggest is overfilling the basket. The rest are small habits. Here are the nine I'd warn a new owner about, each with its fix.
Loading
- Filling the basket because it is deep. Quarts count the whole basket. Crisping happens in one layer. A 6 quart basket has a floor of roughly 87 square inches, per the COSORI listing. Fill the floor, not the height. See quarts vs what fits.
- Trusting the maker's pounds of fries. One 5 quart listing here claims 4 pounds. A 6 quart listing claims 2. For crisp fries, think closer to the low number and shake often.
- Skipping the shake. Food in the middle of a pile steams. Shake piled foods once or twice, and flip flat foods once.
Setup
- Cooking tight under the cabinets. Hot air has to go somewhere. COSORI's listing asks for 5 inches behind and above. Check your manual and slide the unit forward to cook. Numbers for all six picks are on the counter and power page.
- Sharing the outlet with the kettle or toaster. These air fryers draw 1500 to 1800 watts. Two heating appliances on one circuit can trip the breaker. Run one at a time.
- Setting it on the stove. One bumped knob melts the base. Pick another spot.
Cooking and care
- Using oven times as they are. Air fryers usually cook faster. Start 25°F lower and check at 80 percent of the time. The table is on the conversion page.
- Judging chicken by color. The outside browns early. The USDA's safe minimum for poultry is 165°F inside. Use a thermometer.
- Spraying the basket with aerosol oil, then scrubbing it. If your manual warns against aerosol sprays on nonstick, believe it. Brush on oil instead, use soft tools, and wash gently. More on the coatings page.
One more: buying the wrong size
If every dinner takes two batches, no habit will fix that. Owners of the 5 and 6 quart baskets here call them a nice size for two people. For four or more, look at an oven-style model like the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, or a dual basket like the Ninja DualZone if your meals are a main plus a side. Work out your own number with the size calculator, then see the shortlist. For most homes of one to three, my pick is the COSORI TurboBlaze 6 Qt.
Follow your manual first. This is general information, not electrical, nutrition or medical advice.
